New Brunswick HS Project -cont'd
MILESTONE ALERT!
This is the largest I ever drew a zit at a live gig!............ (applause subsides....)
This guy came up to me and asked me to give him the works! He says "I don't know how you could possibly make it any more brutal than the one he did!" pointing to Wacky Lunatic Johnny Sprague, who was assaulting people's faces like he was MJ's plastic surgeon (AWW-I didn't want to go there....). I said I'll do my best... to do my worst..!
I noticed he had 2 itty bitty pinpoint zits on each side of his face (the camera didn't even pick them up..) so I EXAGGERATED them..that's what Caricaturists do...ExAG-jur-ATE! He loved it!

NEW BRUNSWICK HS Project Grads
June was a crazy busy time with 10pm-3am gigs... sometimes running into 12pm-3pm and later, grad parties.
This was one of my favorite gigs ever-drawing alongside Angie Jordan, Emily Anthony, and Nutcase Johnny Sprague!
Along with a couple other artists...
The NB gigs are always a BLAST-These kids always have the BEST sense of humor and pretty thick skins (even the girls ask to get nutty drawings)
Sometimes, the drawings get even crazier than normal-with the encouragement of the kids-
and that is just how I LIKE IT!-Thanks to all who made it happen!
Here's some of my faves...

There were a lot of close-2nds, but the decibels and duration of this lady's enjoyment stand out from all the rest!
She loved her caricature! I laugh at this everytime I see it! Hope you do too!

FUNATICO
Check out this site:
The first I heard of it was on Steve Silver's blog
Steve is an awesome character designer and very cool guy.
A few days later I got an email from Ivan at Funatico.com-a cool new site with lotsa fun stuff, pix, games, etc.
He said he was impressed with my work and would like to feature it!
It's great that he is also interested in my Flash toons for future posting.
It's also awesome that he posts the pix at a pretty large size so you don't have to strain your eyes.
Thanks Ivan!
Funatico is one of the most popular entertainment sites on the web with huge collection of funny videos that will make you lol. If you want to have fun and you have some free time at home or school you can play something from Funatico flash games archive. Don't forget to check out their cool gallery of funny pictures too.

Memory Sketching-Silver inspired

I've always been inspired and influenced by the brilliant work of Steve Silver, lately I've really tried to study his approach.
I've always done memory-sketching of faces, but he introduced this brand new aspect of it, challenging as hell, but fun as Hades-it's memory sketching FACE AND POSTURE. These are a few from my latest stabs.
These peeps were all in my Dr's office. One guy was grumbling to the girl behind the counter about filling out forms.
He kept talking to himself loud nuff for all to hear..."Same SHIT as Last Time!...he had great face and a flesh scarf of wrinkles in back of his head. Another guy walked round with his belt unbuckled, and this girl had a cool belt buckle.
I like these but over all I grade meself b-, c+ for capturing the actual posture...the grumbling guy though is A+!

CARICATURES IN A FLASH!

Man, THAT is one misleading title, since some of these took a helluva lotta time!
I've been trying to teach myself FLASH and doing some caricatures in it to keep me interested in it, sometimes the only way I can learn is to make it fun...
It's a little frustrating in that a lot of features in PS and Illustrator are so intuitive to me and they are non existent in Flash. It's starting to grow on me now though and it does have some really cool features.
I approached these in a character design way-some of these I'm pretty happy with, and that made it worth all the wall-headbanging in the beginning! Any Flash gurus, feel free to enlighten me!

CARICATURE SKETCHES

IMMMA TRY to BLOG more in 09!
I know lotsa people like to sketch in coffee shops, but the REAL caricature gems are in Walmart after 11pm.
Crazy weather lately so I guess you could go barefoot & shirtless in suspenders in Dec.
and this Indian lady looked like she was holding on this tv for dear life...although these are memory sketches, I gotta admit I really didn't exaggerate too much at all!

Full-body Caricatures

BIN a long, lonely, lonely lonely ...lonely ....TIME.
Some oldies here....
This was a very interesting gig with fellow Toonster, Angie Jordan.
HAD to be 8x10 paper and we were to ask the sitter HOW THEY MET the birthday girl AND WHAT THEY WERE WEARING!-we were then to draw that outfit in the cartoon-60's, 70's, 80's garb etc
Interesting thing is the sitters who were the nieces or nephews and had no idea what they'd be wearing-so we just went with a theme or event of their recall. This was definitely more demanding drawing at smaller size with full body and I approached it more as character design, drawing a lot tighter than my usual loose quick lines, but I really started digging it after 2 or 3. The mars graphic duo was great for this and would really like to do this again.

BACK FROM THE NCN CON 2008!!!

What a BLAST the NCN CON is!
200+ of the world's greatest caricaturists from around the world gather to draw eachother in every stretch possible-no holds barred! Artists from Australia, Belgium, China, Ireland, England, Japan, netherlands, Singapore and more come to compete, network, greet old friends, meet new friends and just share the love of caricature!
The hardest part of these cons for me is to absorb all the inspiration and creative artistic experimentation and
STILL REMAINED FOCUS on a particular project-it's like an overload of ideas that fight eachother to get out of the pen first-this results in having to pick and choose between completing your work or starting more unfinished pieces.
All thru the year there are a few Isolated moments of divine inspiration....at the con, it is a bombardment!
This year I went digital and used plasq's Comic Life to create comicbook pages for my wall.
Here's some pieces (and explanations):
Roger Hurtado-fellow NCNer-and taco eater, also shared the stage with new president Obama in Chicago...and farted.
Adam English-fellow NCNer-and singer songwriter of hillarious caricature songs-with a neck like a flagpole...and a voice like a tadpole.
Joe Bluhm-fellow NCNer-award-winner and amateur dentist-Joe can't do anything besides draw, paint or sculpt-In fact, he's so inept at manual labor he would use a pair of pliers to bang in the screws on his "Nosey" braces. (thus the bloodstains)
Jan & Klaas OpdeBeeck-fellow NCNers-Jan gives numerous drawing classes, and his nephews name is Klaas {pronounced "class") and Klaas" hair is crazy wild, like stink lines-and Jan farts (I couldn't resist the pun)
Mike Giblin-fellow NCNer-guy from England-drinks beer-surprise!?
Niall Oloughlin & Tad Barney-fellow NCNers-Nial-guy from Ireland-drinks LOTS of beer-Tad-runs the Nose Caricature Co.
Nial is more interested in the Golden Lager in Tad Barney's hand then in the Golden Nosey to his left.

"The Day After the Night Before"

I HAVE TO STRESS THAT THIS IS NOT THE DRAWING STYLE I WILL DO AT YOUR EVENT UNLESS YOU REQUEST IT!
THESE ARE SPECIAL REQUESTS and by special order!
I had a couple of "No-Mercy" weddings & parties awhile ago. These are some of the FUNNEST parties I get to do.
As I mentioned, I do a lot of these "Day After the Night Before" sketches, when you have more than 5-10 minutes to rethink the subject-and try to nail it 100%...kinda like Aha-THAT'S what I shudda done- BUT since these were "No Mercy", I really aimed for ridicule over likeness-though some of the people really did look like this...I will not mention names to protect the innocent- but you KNOW who you are!

NO MERCY-Love hearing that!
These were from a No Mercy Wedding-BUT they had to be QUick!-No time for the sketchy detail and I had to get 40+ people done-some couples & groups, and it was 100 degrees out!
But this was very cool gig despite the temperature.
Strange but very creative & ORIGINAL idea that the bride came up with-I would draw all the caricatures in a photo book they provided me AND NONE of the sitters got to see THEIR own picture! (they could only see who I drew previously)...nobody took anything home-THAT'S a first for me..
Instead the bride made booklets later and gave them out as Thank yous to their guests!
..that's ONE C(R)OOL THANK YOU!
Thanks & Congrats Magda & Brian!! !

This crowd was really cool and the laughs got louder as the day went on!
GOTTA Luv the guys who tell you what you're gonna draw..."He gonna gimme GIANT WALRUS TEETH!" the one kid says to his bud...actually I was more contemplative of the portly center fellow at the time to even have looked at the guy yet but once he gave me the idea..... Damn! He was right!
Thanks guys, you gave me a LOT to work with!

Full-color, Full-body Caricature Parties-Sexy!
This lovely lady said she wanted to be in a "sexy thong bikini".
The gentleman voiced no argument, just smiled widely.
Full-color, Full-body Caricature Parties
More fun stuff! First time I drew a sea-turtle with mermaids-like the Kinks sang "give the people what they want!"
Full-color, Full-body Caricature Parties
This guy was a popular subject, even before he sat.
Everyone kept telling me he was lost on a mountain for a week, hence the "maps for dummies" book.
Full-color, Full-body Caricature Parties
It's nice to get these gigs where you can take your time and work on the cartoons.
I love it when the background conversation gives you more info & ideas than the sitter does or the spontanaeity of of an unpredictable sitter inspires one to capture the moment in time. Case in point, this fun-loving couple...he had tried out for Ny Jets but hurt his knee(s), and she ,well, she was burping scallions in the poor guys face, they laughed their asses off and it was a magical moment!

DOGGY-DOO-DLES

I've been really loving drawing dogs lately!
I think it's a real memory builder-since you gotta kinda trust your minds eye cuz ain't no dog sittin still for a caricature! My favorite part lately is the crazy, slobbery, rubbery gumstuff that bulldogs and others have!
As with people, I find I'm sketching out some of the sitters of yesterday the next morning-
I do a lot of these "Day After the Night Before" sketches, when you have more than 5-10 minutes to rethink the subject-and try to nail it 100%...kinda like Aha-THAT'S what I shudda done!...I'll try posting some of these later.
I think I'm getting a better understanding of actually EXAGGERATING the moods as well as the features of the dogs faces. I don't want to draw big-eyed smiley faces or just a resemblance of the breed, more like tryna see a dog from a dog's point of view..How would a dog draw a caricature of another dog?
Next, I intend to try to pay more attention to body language in my next couple gigs, as I think after looking at the photos, sometimes I overlook a really distinct body shape or stance and that could really add HUMOR to the finished work.

THESE ARE SOME Pix from a recent 10pm-3am gig with fellow NCNers John Sprague, Angie Jordan & Emily Anthony among others. (Check them out on sidebar) This is 3-4 years doing this gig and these kids are ALWAYS cool to work with!
Here's a pic I took of kids taking pix of my work thru the window while waiting in line. A lot of these kids will head for my chair-and some of them will avoid it like the plague. I like when the sitter not only knows what they're in for, but look forward to it! Some of these are from the "laughter" vids posted previously. Thanks fo da gig, Sprigman! and thanks for all the great LAUGHS, East Brunswick grads! Congrats!

"Luck of the Draw"

I worked 7 years as a graphic artist for Toll Brothers mostly in Photoshop & Illustrator.
Graphic programs can be a lot of fun, but nothing beats good ole fashioned DRAWING!
I've done some pretty sledgehammery smashed up drawings of some coworkers, some of which I plan to post.
I've also created a couple gift caricatures and custom artwork for some departments and employees.
Toll had a "Fine Art" contest and my 3 pieces (counting as one entry) won me an award and was published in their company newsletter "Bricks & Sticks" so
I was approached to do my own column, featuring a caricature of an employee per issue.
The fun part of it was that I could do whatever style/approach I chose. I planned to vary as much as I could and experiment with new influences.
I had a couple submissions but this guy was hands down the funnest face in the bunch-plus he entered 40 seconds after the issue came out...
This is the first "winner" of the Toll's "Luck of the Draw" contest and the last since I was one of many, many who got laid off, don't know if this guy did too. If, by chance this guy visits my blog-feel free to email me & I'll send you the hi-res file. You were fun to draw!

MOOORE-PROJECT GRADUATIONS POST PROMS
Man,spent a lot of time drawing from 10pm-3am the last few weeks!
These were a BLAST! No-"make me pretty" or "don't make my nose too big" These kids wanted to LAUGH!
I think the sleep-deprivation contributes to the kids really getting into having the wackiest caricatures they can get!
How else to explain these? She said she wanted "worm-chins"...that was a first.
