Kathy loves her Great Danes!
Colonel is quite the trooper!
Surviving many surgeries and battling onward, Kathy commissioned me to do this Marine soldier cartoon concept to commemorate his fortitude. She sent me pix of his scar that went up the length of his belly...
I did 2 of her other dogs and she has them printed out 4 ft x 2.5 ft hanging prominently in what she affectionately calls "Harringtoon Hall"
I always LOVE drawing dogs and This was a LOT of fun!!

WEDDING CARICATURES

I had the great pleasure of doing wedding caricatures for the fun-loving Kelsey & Dan and their family and friends-mostly all fans of the crazier No-Mercy style I like to execute (pun intended)!
I knew it was gonna be fun-when a downpour came and while I was in the men's room, a guest came in soaking wet laughing and umm...wiping his wet areas, protesting he didn't pee himself no matter how it looks and he shudda brought an umbrella...funny guy and he was the 1st one to sit in my chair so I tried to commemorate the lavatory exchange-he nearly wet himself again when he saw the pic!
Fun-loving CRAZY folks were laughing and encouraging me to get more & more twisted thru the night-requesting bizarre things, flu-shot buttocks and Frankenstein scars.....
It was a BLAST and one of the funnest wedding events I did last year!- my only regret is that my memory card in my camera got misplaced and it took me so long to find & post these....(and that I don't check my fb very often...sorry bout that...)

Having a BLAST working on 55+ characters for an AWESome project that for now is "confidential"-.

Of the 20 or so that I've done so far, these are the tamest and least offensive (to the easilly offended) of the lot! All I can say for now is it's probably in the R rated category and one of the coolest, funnest projects I've been fortunate to be a part of and they LOVE my craAzier stuff!...so soon as I am permitted to give the details, I will!

One of my New Years Resolutions is to try to blog more and blog currently.
This is the FIRST time I ever blogged about an event on the same day of doing the event.
This was a Super fun Bar Mitzvah with fun faces and great people!-5 straight hours of drawing & laughing and laughing and drawing!

Interesting requests, from bath tubs to flower children to running from plane to plane, and spontaneous laughter!

Here are a couple favorites from this years Christmas' gift commissions.
Quite a contrast in theme/ style but the feedback from the clients was very similar in that they each loved their piece!
1st was a cutie toon of a boy in NY who really likes T Rex.

2nd one was a little off-center for Christmas time, but it definitely fits perfectly with the client & his instructions! Frank is a super fun guy with a seriously warped sense of humor!

I've been working on the artwork, character designs and animation for a few ipad apps now for quite some time and one of them is now completed and on the app store!! Anyone who is familiar with my work will notice this is a GIANT departure from my other styles and this was a very learning experience.
The art director definitely knew what he wanted and I had to incorporate a lot of gradients and mask layers in flash to create the product he wanted. I spent as much time thinking as I did drawing on this-my 1st kids ipad app. Sooo much more to this than just drawing, I think of all the projects I've worked on, I learned the most from this one- and so much more to still learn.....

I'm looking forward to getting back to the more zany projects but I am also happy that I have yet another style to offer clients and look forward to working with James and Backatcha in the future!
It's a really cute story and I think little kids will love it-especially the voice recording function that changes the pitch of the kids voices (and of course the cool artwork and animation)..!

I did this Steve Jobs caricature when it was announced my app would be one of many flash created ones to be denied access to the ipad- Thank God that all changed (for the Zombie app anyway) since but at the time Apple was restricting EVERYTHING with the slightest tint of a grey area- from Tiger Woods apps to Bobble head's by Mad mags Tom Richmond to ANYTHING with boobies!....(see the piece in question below) Gotta love all the toys Steve gave us to make part of our lives-RIP Mr. Jobs-Thanks for everything.

This was a great fun-loving family!
Jeff and his family were having so much fun with my Cutesy/ Crazy styled caricatures I ended up going double OT!
I really loved doing the group caricatures- especially Jeff and all the kids- and mixing up the Cute kids-not-so-cute-grownups!

Another favorite part was the brother & sister starting out hugging lovey-dovey and ending up knocking eachother out in boxing ring! Thanks Jeff!

I'll have to post the video of this too with the narrating by a very wise young lady with a great eye for art exclaiming between bites of her doughnuts, after each revealing..."it looks EXACTLY LIKE YOU!!..

This is the 4th or 5th year I've had the pleasure of doing the grad gift caricatures for my client in Canada. The more I work in Flash the more I LOVE it! Bern comes up with some pretty funny scenarios and I just love to run with it-this time I capitalized on the MAD mag's Sergio Aragones "The Shadow Knows" theme for THE HOBO/ GUITAR PLAYER, which by the way IS MY FAVE, ...it also happens to be of my client's son! Thanks Bernd!

But first heres some pix from the very 1st KIDS BOOK I was the sole artist for. (I contributed to other kids books but never had the whole thing before. I did all the illustrations for this issue "Outnumbered" of the "Bad Cats" series. Lotsa fun with it. Pretty creative author, Brad Skafish has really cool, humorous poetic writing style.

It was an interesting mix of conforming to the existing character restrictions and adding my own flavor as well.

I'd definitely have done some cat things different if it were my way-had LOTS a fun with the dogs though!

Playing with the uber cool Sketchbook Pro on iPad.
Cool brushes and some gimmicky clipart stuff too.
Coloring effects/speed is the main advantage I see of the iPad over traditional....that and not running out of paper.

ANIMATED BIRTHDAY GIFT!

This is an edited version of the 1st big project I did entirely on my Cintiq!....and I dont think I could have done it without THE AMAZING DOUBLE CLICK PEN! (and make deadline)!
It was a 14 day timeline and most of those were 10am-5am days!
This was a birthday gift and definitely one of the most intense birthday gifts I ever worked on.
Probably the most intense project PERIOD!
My client opted for cartoon characters ilo caricatures per se and he had a very specific set of action scenes and scenery to animate, while giving me artistic/ humorous license to elaborate.
He also had a specific soundtrack requested-(otherwise it would be all Zeppelin songs!)

His comments:
Great! Love them! You are a rockstar....
These are awesome!
It was amazing. She LOVED it!
You totally rock! Everyone who's seen it so far is completely wowed!

It was a lot of fun & a LOT of work (and little sleep) and I look forward to more projects like this(but hopefully more comfortable deadlines)

This was my 1st ipad gig and the kids LOVED it -it was a BLAST!
There is a definite learning curve to it but 45 min-hr into it I found it becoming more and more intuitive, though I definitely still have much to learn about it but I'm definitely confident in adding this to my caric-arsenal and look forward to more!
I had the great fortune of working alongside Digital Blacksmith's ipad veterans Angie & Scott and am deeply indebted for their assistance, especially to techno-uber-genius (at least compared to me) Scott for letting me borrow his brain and handling the printing end of the task whilst i doodled on the pad. Thanks guys!

I was also happy that this 1st gig got me one of my best compliments in my 20+ yrs of caricaturing....a cute young lady declared between the bursts of laughter:
"That is the BEST picture I EVER seen!-(period!)

Still working on finishing up the muscle crow Elvis zombie...
Mean while got another inquiry on different game needing, you guessed it, Zombie character designs.
Actually I had 3 different inquiries on zombie games that I used these for and one client loved them so it wasn't 30 minutes wasted.
Hopefully this comes to fruition as I really dig this kind of work and am continually learning more cool flash animation.

Well I'm thinking of making a resolution to blog/ fb more....problem is 24 hrs in one day -if I blog for 4 hrs, that's 4 hrs I could have been drawing or animating and that's 4 too many! But I will try to stay more regular...."Activiaaaa!

These were a couple of faves from the nght-having fun playing @ with character design and tones since the lighting accentuated the shapes soooooo much. This is a group gift caric I did for a client for Christmas.
I did a live Vegas themed wedding event for him and he LOVES the crazier NO MERCY stuff!
Truth be told this is my FAVORITE of all styles to work in and it's pure joy to work in a style that keeps me laughing while working and this one surely did! PLUS it was also the 1st file I ever worked on with my brand new Cintiq!
Bill has a GREAT sense of humor and is a fan of "TRUE (non-flattering, high ridiculing caricature" and also loves my Zeppelin piece, he's the 1st buyer of my Zep print which I plan to make available on cafepress soon.
(I ALSO HOOKED HIM UP WITH A REALLY COOL ZEPPELIN BAND'S T-SHIRT)

Clients comments:
I got the no mercy email and it is wicked. You got us good (down to the zits on my neck!) I can't wait until Christmas to lay it on my family. They will flip! She'll like ours. I got the party print and Zep yesterday. Very cool. I'll hang Zep in my office.

It was a really fun project and Steve was awesome to work with!
The description of style I was given was a monochrome of the Pulp Fiction Blood sample in my portfolio.

RIP Mr. Jackson, the finest dog I ever knew... so fine!
This comical little guy has been the inspiration for so many of my doggy-doodles.
He made me laugh and listened to my singing daily.
He loved popcorn & hated rain and was better toilet trained than most kids! woohoo!
We loved this guy and he will be missed.

Just finished up more Approved Character designs for iphone app
PROBably titled ZOMBIES VS SENIORS, but still not confirmed yet...
I really LOVE doing this kind of work but I'm Dying to see the finished game on ipad!

BLAST FROM THE PAST

Came across this piece I did while in art school....lo some 20 or so years ago...ouch!
It's for the story "The Old Man & the Sea"-great movie with Spencer Tracey....
I remember the reason I picked this scene was just about every other artist in class was going with the literal and obvious subjects of the marlin and boat and sea and I was tired of doing that for other projects so I wanted to go in a direction that was more personal to the story and really only accurately interpretable by those who actually read the book (or saw the movie)-not just the title.

It's still one of my favorite pieces I ever did and I miss the discipline of art school to pull me out of my "Cartoondom Safe Haven" at least once in a while...Thanks for the assignment, Kim!

I coulda (and wanted) to go a LOT further with zombie or Frankenstein monsters, body parts, etc. but client didn't want to go that way-I really like the way the tubes came out and client LOVED it so it's all good!

Did an M&m themed mitzvah with some great people who really LOVED my work!
Had to draw LOT of kids quickly-NOT MUCH TIME FOR PIX...
but these couples were some of my favorites- ESPECIALLY when they REQUESTED to be in SWIMSUITS!

Ahh yes..... the Proj Grad/ Post prom season-gotta love them ? til 3am gigs!
These are always a blast and it seeems the lack of sleep by both artist and subject and the ensuing laughter and delerium lead to some pretty wild drawings and requests.
Always love the "group caricatures and the inevitable "jump in at the last minute" folk.
Sometimes I leave these gigs with a sore throat from all the laughing!

Just finished up a bunch of these gifticature character design toons.
These are more in the style of Saturday morning cartoons-which flash lends itself to very well IMHO.
I enjoy these as a change of pace from the crazier exaggerated stuff and it's a nice exercise to try out different styles....and It's a lot of fun too-Thanks Bernd!

Dogggy-catures for wall.

This is the 1st flash/ illustrator vector toon of a job that came from the Debella Dog Walk day.
This is "Ireland" you can see the 5 min version I did at the walk is a bit different from the studio piece.
The final is to be printed 2 or 3 ft high and hung in the dog's room.
After speaking about it, I found this was the style the client wanted and best for the size/ printability issues and her preference.

Her comments: I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT! I LOVE THE SHAMROCKS TOO!
I think she really loved it....Thanks Kathy!

(Although, personally I still love the Jackson farting style myself...)

At 1st, I was PSYCHED when the ipad came out-thought my zombie game will look great on it!..
WELL, I've been posting for some time now about the iphone/ ipad zombie game being finished and now that it is near ready for distributing, Apple announces that they "won't allow" content made with Flash! The programmer tells me that it'll be at least another month now to convert it to C plus or minus or whatever!
First they come up with the "NO BOOBIES" on apps rule and now this! Apple makes some wonderful toys/tools but being told how to play with, use them after you shell out the cash is shear pompous stupidity that I hope it backfires on the censor-happy Jobs. Come on Google, get your ipad version out and give Jobs a big chunk of humble pie!

The 1st feedback is that the Hare & Lemming are perfect-just need a little tweaks-but the main character needs a rehaul-he looks too old and no glasses or hat (I thought glasses were integral to an inventor)

I have an animation short project going on right now-it's probably my biggest animation task to date-to be 4-6 min iin length at finish.
I thought it might be cool to go thru my process step by step in hopes that it helps somebody or compels somebody to tell me what I'm doing wrong-either way I'm open to constructive criticism and advice.

So my 1st step is nailing down the character designs from client's description-
TURTLE-Intelligent , inventor, climbs in and out of shell, uses shell as race car, equips shell with his many inventions.
HARE- self assured blow hard, always running in place, usually dressed in running apparel, dislikes carrots, prefers protein shakes.
LEMMING-not bad just easily persuaded, should look dopey, not very intelligent.

Here's my 1st rough designs...

OK-this was one of my Favorites!-
The idea was at 1st glance, maybe 4-5 seconds, What is the most dominant feature of all the faces? DEFINITELY the guy on the left's NOSE-it was a no-brainer...UNTIL the fella on the right sat down-he wasn't in my 1st scan of shapes & sizes, he came late-BUT his CHIN was the CLEAR winner in this new geometric Wonderland-sooo I originally was going to have him and his sister share that chin but it just didn't catch the feel of him w/o the rough stubble sooo now his chin is hiding her face instead, except for her smile-which really stood out-methinks...

Wound up drawing the same peeps cuppla times-I always try to take a different approach when this happens-changing the views profile/ 3/4 or expressions..often it ends up being a caricature of the 1st caricature-which is what eventually happens to my friends w/ the green shirt and nose and the glasses & teeth kid-BWAAAAHAHAHAH!!
